Education is the foundation of sustainable development. This is the firm belief of SCG, one of the leading business conglomerates in ASEAN region, as it continues to award high school and college scholarships to deserving Filipino students. SCG presents this year’s 10 college scholars along with 300 high school scholarship recipients of its Sharing the Dream Program in an awarding ceremony held at the Philippine International Convention Center on July 11, 2019.
Now on its 12th year, SCG’s Sharing the Dream Program remains committed to making education more accessible to more Filipinos. It has been supporting more than 2,000 Filipino students achieve their goal of having a better future.
Annually, SCG celebrates the academic success of its scholars with a recognition program, where students have achance to develop themselves to be more confident and more ready to pursue their passion.
According to the Commission on Higher Education Chairperson J. Prospero De Vera, the Philippines is trailing its neighboring countries Thailand and Malaysia in the number of students enrolled in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). All three countries provide free college education yet the Phil-ippines recorded only 33 percent participation rate among college students while Thailand and Ma-laysia records 44 and 43 percent, respectively. SCG hopes to contribute to addressing the situation by helping encourage students to pursue a university degree and become productive citizens and future leaders of the Philippines.
Driven by passion more than responsibility
Beyond being part of the company’s corporate social responsibility initiatives, the Sharing the Dream Program reflects SCG’s passion to help improve the lives of the people in the communities it operates in. The program’s running theme, “Passion for Better,” captures SCG’s commitment to develop sustainable communities by encouraging students to strive for the better and nurture a continuous thirst for learning.
Anuvat Chalermchai, SCG Philippines Country Director said “We believe that the youth is every country’s hope for a better future, and nurturing them today is a must. Our commitment to support the Philippines remains strong as we continue to provide educational assistance to competent students with good academic performance and the dedication and passion to succeed in life.”
Outstanding scholars of 2019
SCG continues its support for 300 Filipino high school students, twice the number of scholars they provided when the program was first initiated in the country. Following the first 10 college scholars awarded in 2018, SCG wishes to recognize exemplary scholars to add to its roster of awardees.
All scholarship applicants underwent a tedious screening pro-cess aimed at selecting the most deserving recipients. Applicants are required to have a general weighted average (GWA) of 85 percent or higher and a strong drive to pursue a higher education-al degree and help their families.
Each college scholar will receive Php25,000 worth of educational assistance per year on top of the annual trainings, seminars and workshops aimed at developing and improving their skills.
